Vienna Philharmonic New Year's Concert 2011 with Franz Welser-Möst
The Vienna Philharmonic under Franz Welser-Möst ushered in the New Year in traditional fashion
with the 2011 New Year’s Concert at the Musikverein in Vienna. Performing compositions by the Strauss
family as well as Joseph Lanner, Joseph Hellmesberger and Franz Liszt, the orchestra and conductor presented
this most Viennese of all music not only to the audience in attendance in the Golden Hall but also to millions of television
viewers in over 70 countries worldwide. Franz Welser-Möst, the General Music Director of the Vienna State Opera
who in June 2010 also conducted the orchestra’s annual Summer Night Concert Schönbrunn, made his New Year’s Concert debut,
conducting a program in which several works of the Strauss family and Liszt’s Mephisto Waltz No. 1 received their first
performance in this setting.
The New Year’s Concert 2011 will be broadcast again on January 6th at 8:15 PM in 3sat and on January 6th at 10:05 AM in ORF 2. The documentary "Die Welt der Wiener Philharmoniker" offers insights into the daily life of the orchestra on January 2nd at 2:00 PM on 3sat.
In view of the tradition of the New Year's Concerts, which began during the darkest times of World War II, the Vienna Philharmonic performs the concert to this today not only as a presentation of Viennese musical culture at the highest level, but also to send the world a New Year's greeting in the spirit of hope, friendship and peace.
