Opening Committee

The procession and dance of the young ladies and gentlemen of the opening committee is one of the highlights of each year's Philharmonic Ball.

Registration
Registration to dance the opening is possible in person, by letter, or e-mail beginning in September in the Ball & Ticket Office of the Vienna Philharmonic (1010 Vienna, Kärntner Ring 12). Please give us your birthdate, address, telephone number, height and E-mail Address. In October you will receive a written invitation to a dance audition which will take place in November at the Elmayer School of Dance, (Bräunerstraße 13, 1010 Vienna, Tel: 512 71 97).

Requirements
- Minimum age: ladies 17, gentlemen 18 years; maximum age: 27.
- Ability to dance Viennese waltz (turning to the left)
- Dress: Ladies – floor-length, white evening gown, white gloves; Gentlemen – black tails, white gloves

Rehearsals
Rehearsals are scheduled to take place between January 13 and 19, 2011 in the Musikverein in Vienna. Attendance at all rehearsals is mandatory. The production will be prepared by the Elmayer School of Dance, under the direction of Thomas Schäfer-Elmayer.

New Year's Concert 2011

 

The Vienna Philharmonic New Year's Concert 2011 will be conducted by Franz Welser-Möst.

 

An Appreciation of Otto Nicolai

 

This year the international music world commemorates the 200th birthday of several composers. In 1810, Frédéric Chopin was born on March 1st in Żelazowa Wola and Robert Schumann was born on June 8th in Zwickau. The Vienna Philharmonic celebrates an even more significant anniversary with the birthday of Otto Nicolai on June 9, 1810, in Königsberg.

 

Beethoven Cycle Berlin & Paris

 

The Vienna Philharmonic under Christian Thielemann performs the complete Beethoven Symphonies in Berlin and Paris in November and Dezember 2010.
