On October 20/21, 2007, in the Large Hall of the Konzerthaus, Daniel Harding conducted "Six Pieces for Orchestra" by Anton Webern; Symphony No. 3 in D Major, D 200, by Franz Schubert; and Gustav Mahler's "Lied von der Erde (Song of the Earth)". The soloists were Burkhard Fritz (Tenor) and Michelle de Young (Soprano), who took over the role on short notice for an indisposed Angelica Kirchschlager. Ms. De Young sang the part despite having just returned from a tour in Japan and without time for an orchestral rehearsal.
Since 2002, the Vienna Philharmonic has presented an annual "Concert for Austria" which has as its basis a contract with the Republic of Austria. For this year's event, Austria's Chancellor Dr. Alfred Gusenbauer made good his former intention to hold the concert each year in a different Austrian province. Thus on this national holiday, the concert took place in the Haydn-Saal of the Esterhazy Palace in Eisenstadt and was, as is customary, broadcast by Austrian Television. This year's "Concert for Austria" was conducted by Daniel Harding and featured Franz Schubert's Symphony No. 3, and German Dances, D820, in the instrumentation of Anton Webern, as well as Webern's "Six Pieces for Orchestra". The waltz "Künstlerleben", op. 316, by Johann Strauss concluded an evening which represented a musical excursion covering more than a hundred years of Austrian compositional history.
Between October 22 and October 25, 2007, Daniel Harding also conducted a studio recording of Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 10, in the version by Deryck Cooke, which is based on the original sketches of the composer. In the Alte Oper in Frankfurt/M. on October 28, 2007, there followed a performance of this work, with which Daniel Harding also made his debut in the subscription concert series in December 2004.
