On October 24, 2008, Professor Kurt Anders, violist of the Vienna Pharmonic, died at 86 years of age following a short, grave illness.
Professor Kurt Anders
Born on May 30, 1923 in Vienna, Kurt Anders was influenced musically by an institution rich in tradition: being accepted into the Konvikt der Vienna Boy's Choir at the age of eight, where he received his required schooling and performed as vocal soloist both in Austria and abroad. After a year learning the violin at the Conservatory of the City of Vienna, he was taken into the class of Ernst Morawec where he studied violin and viola. His study with this iconic teacher was abruptly cut short when on June 1, 1942 Anders was inducted into the German military, where he was required to serve in the army medical corps until the end of the war. On September 1, 1946, he was engaged as a violist with the State Opera at the Theater an der Wien and advanced one year later to become the section leader of the Orchestra of the Vienna Volksoper. More than sixteen years later, he performed another successful audition and as a result, he became a member of the Vienna State Opera Orchestra on January 1, 1964. As of October 1, 1967, he was granted membership in the Vienna Philharmonic, where he remained an active member until his retirement on September 1, 1989.
Kurt Anders, who received the professional title of Professor, and was awarded the Silver Medal of Service to the Republic of Austria and the Gold Medal of Service of the Province of Salzburg, devoted himself soon after joining our orchestra with particular diligence to administrative responsibilities. In 1966 he became a chairman of the Gewerkschaft für Kunst, Medien und Freie Berufe, and served in other ways such as being chosen to serve in the player's committee of the Vienna State Opera Orchestra and from 1968 through 1981 he belonged to the Philharmonic administrative committee in the position of Committee Member without Portfolio until 1976, Treasurer (1977-1984) and Vice Chairman (1978-1981). Beginning in 1977, Kurt Anders, who was also a member of the Vienna Hofmusikkapelle, became a member of the board of the Vienna Boys Choir, returning once again to his musical roots.
