Two New Philharmonic Members

Pavel Kuzmichev

Pavel Kuzmichev
, who was born into an artistic family on January 7, 1976, in Kiev, received his first violin instruction at the age of six. In 1987 he began study with Swetlana Bzrodnaya at the central music school of the Moscow Conservatory, changing seven years later to the class of Maya Glezarova at Moscow's Tchaikovsky Conservatory, where he completed his diploma under the auspices of Maxim Fedotov. It was in this same year that he moved to Austria and continued his violin work with Günter Pichler at the University of Music and Performing Arts. In January of 2004, he performed a successful audition for the Vienna State Opera Orchestra and began his service there the following September.

During his years as a student, which he augmented with master classes given by Michael Frischenschlager, Dora Schwarzberg and Jiří Tomášek, Pavel Kuzmichev was awarded two coveted scholarships, that of the Yurij-Yankelevich-Foundation (1992-1994) and the Herbert von Karajan Foundation (2003/04). In addition to this he was successful as a soloist with various orchestras, including a performance of the Violin Concerto of Alban Berg. He also won numerous prizes at international competitions in Russia and Austria, including the Stefanie Hohl Competition of the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna.

Harald Hörth

Harald Hörth
was born on March 29, 1969 in Zwettl and was given basic musical training in piano and clarinet from his brother, Reinhard. Although he achieved success as a clarinettist early on, winning the first prize at "Jugend musiziert", he changed instruments in 1984 and took up the oboe, studying at what was, at the time, the College of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna under Manfred Kautzky and Klaus Lienbacher. In 1992 he completed his diploma with distinction, and continued his studies with Günter Lorenz and attended master classes offered by Hansjörg Schellenberger and Heinz Holliger. This intensive work enabled him to launch an impressive orchestral career.  Hörth was principal oboist with the Vienna Chamber Orchestra (1989-1991), with the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra (1991-1994) and the Vienna Symphony (1994-2004). Following a successful audition, he began his work as principal oboist with the Vienna State Opera Orchestra on September 1, 2004.

Parallel to his orchestral career, Harald Hörth, who in 1987 passed his Matura exams at the Academic High School in Vienna, appeared as soloist with the Vienna Symphony, the Austrian-Hungarian Haydn Philharmonie, the Vienna Chamber Orchestra and the Graz Symphony, in addition to playing with various chamber music groups (Ensemble Kontrapunkte, Ensemble "die Reihe", Lenau Quintet, Vienna Oboe Trio, "quintet wien").  In 2000 he assumed responsibility for an oboe class at the Vienna Conservatory and since 2006, he has been a member of the Vienna Hofmusikkapelle.
