Schumann with Nikolaus Harnoncourt

On March 14/16, 2008, the Vienna Philharmonic played, for the first time in its history, one of the most important compositions written by Robert Schumann: "Das Paradise und die Peri", op. 50, which, according to Schumann's own words, is "an oratorio, but not composed for the sanctuary - but for cheerful people instead." (letter to Eduard Krüger, June 3, 1843). The work, which takes its name from the story of the same name, and the poem "Lallah Rookh" by the Irish poet, Thomas Moore, on which the libretto, transcribed by Schumann himself, is generally based, was completed in only four months' time. Of the work, Schumann wrote his friend, Johannes Verhulst on June 19, 1843: "Last Friday I finished my "Paradies und die Peri", my most voluminous work and I hope, my best." On December 4, 1843, the world premiere took place in Leipzig at the Gewandhause under Schumann's baton and was a triumphant success. For the official opening of the Festival Osterklang 2008 in Vienna, Nicolaus Harnoncourt conducted this work in concert with the following soloists: Annette Dasch (Peri), Mjca Erdmann (Maiden), Michelle Breedt (Mezzosoprano), Elizsabeth Kulmann (Angel), Cristoph Strehl (Narrator), Bernhard Berchtold (Youth), Christian Gerhaher (Gazna, the man) as well as the Arnold Schoenberg Chorus, prepared by Erwin Ortner.
