Mahler's Third Symphony under Semyon Bychkov

On May 3/4, 2008, the Vienna Philharmonic performed two concerts for the opening of this year's Vienna Festival. Elīna Garanča (mezzo-soprano) and the Women's Chorus of the Society of the Friends of Music in Vienna, along with the Vienna Boys Chorus (prepared by Johannes Prinz and Gerald Wirth, respectively) joined the orchestra in performing Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 3 in D Minor. Mariss Jansons, who was scheduled to conduct the concerts, was forced to cancel due to a sudden illness. Semyon Bychkov agreed to step in on short notice, and thus rescued not only the opening concerts of the Vienna Festival, but also the Soirée on May 6th. Bychkov, who is head conductor of the West German Radio Symphony Orchestra in Cologne, had previously conducted four other concerts of the Vienna Philharmonic (April 12/13, 2003, for the Osterklang Festival in Vienna and August 4/5, 2003 at the Salzburg Festival) as well as nine performances of Richard Strauss' "Der Rosenkavalier" at the Salzburg Festival in 2004.
