Festival Concerts Dedicated to Joseph Haydn

For the opening of this year's Vienna Festival Weeks on May 9/10, 2009, in the large hall of the Konzerthaus, the Vienna Philharmonic performed a program comprised exclusively of compositions by Joseph Haydn. Following the Symphony in D major, Hob. I:93 ("Glocken-Symphonie"), composed in 1791, Clemens Hagen was the soloist for the Cello Concerto in C Major, Hob. VIIb:1. The concert concluded with the Symphony in E-flat major, Hob. I:103 ("Drum Roll"), in a performance accompanied by a notable music-historical detail. At the first performance of this work on March 2, 1795 in London, Giovanni Battista Viotti (1755-1824), one of the most important violinists in music history, was the concert master. He owned a violin built by Antonio Stradivari in 1718, which was purchased by Countess Mysa von Wydenbruck Esterházy in 1913 in order to present it for the 50th birthday of longtime Vienna Philharmonic concert master, Arnold Rosé (1863-1946). In the year 2006, the Austrian National Bank purchased this unique instrument and made it available to the Vienna Philharmonic for the use of concert master, Volkhard Steude, who played it for the violin solo in the second movement of the "Drum Roll" Symphony once again.
