Philharmonic Ceremony

A Philharmonic ceremony honoring Bruno Walter (1876-1962) as well as the 50th anniversary of  the artistic collaboration between the Vienna Philharmonic and Lorin Maazel took place in the Brahmssaal of the Musikverein on February 18, 2012. The program was opened by Rainer Honeck, Alexander Steinberger, Tobias Lea and Raphael Flieder, who underscored Walter's importance as an interpreter of Mozart by performing the third movement of the String Quartet in D major, KV 155 (134a). Between two laudations for this prominent conductor (Clemens Hellsberg: "In Appreciation of Bruno Walter" and Lorin Maazel: "Remembering Bruno Walter"), Rainer Honeck and Maximilian Flieder on piano performed "Alter Refrain", a Viennese folk sang by Johann Brandl, in an arrangement by Fritz Kreisler (1875-1962), who passed away 14 days before Bruno Walter on January 29, 1962 in New York. The conclusion of the first half of the program was the performance by Rainer Honeck, Alexander Steinberger, Tobias Lea and Raphael Flieder of the second movement (Langsam und innig) of a string quartet by Bruno Walter, which the Rosé Quartet had premiered in the Brahmssaal. The music for this performance was kindly provided by the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna.

The second half of this matinee opened with Clemens Hellsberg speaking on "50 Years of Collaboration between the Vienna Philharmonic and Lorin Maazel". Vice-Chairman Alexander Steinberger (*March 21, 1962) and Raphael Flieder (*February 13, 1962) performed together with Maximilian Flieder the first movement from Franz Schubert's Piano Trio in B-flat major, D 898. Vienna State Opera Director Dominique Meyer held a very personal laudation for his predecessor /"My Encounters with Lorin Maazel") and invited him once again to conduct in the "House on the Ring". In remembrance of a premiere during the time of Maazel's directorship of the opera, the ensemble "phil-Blech", directed by Anton Mittermayr, played the "Gran finale secondo" from Giuseppe Verdi's "Aida" in an arrangement by Mark Gaal. There remained yet one more surprise for Lorin Maazel. Karin Tripp, the widow of our long-serving principal flutist Dr. WernerTripp, made available from the extensive audio library of her husband a recording of the first subscription concert conducted by Lorin Maazel, which Anton Mittermayr edited and transferred to compact disc.
