Double Platinum for the New Year's Concert 2009

Daniel Barenboim, Clemens Hellsberg as Chairman of the  Vienna Philharmonic and Reinhard Scolik as representative of the ORF received Double Platinum from Lukas Barwinski of DECCA/Universal Music Austria for over 40,000 copies of the CD of the New Year's Concert 2009 sold in Austria. The DVD sold 10,000 copies and was awarded Gold status.

The CD has been sold worldwide more than 100,000 copies, with the DVD having been sold 50,000 times. The New Year's Concert was broadcast this year by 74 television stations in 72 countries, with a total worldwide television audience of over 45 million. A record was posted in China, where the concert was broadcast nationwide for the first time and viewed by a television audience of 13 million.

Daniel Barenboim was pleased with the distinction and noted that it "reminded me of the pleasant days I spent during the preparation of the New Year's Concert with the Vienna Philharmonic. In Vienna, all music is at home, and it was a special experience to delve into the music of the Strauss family while in Vienna." Clemens Hellsberg, Chairman of the Vienna Philharmonic, views the number of sales as a "clear signal from the audience. It is a very positive sign that even in the middle of times of economic crisis people are willing to spend money fur culture." Chief Coordinator Reinhard Scolik accepted the award on behalf of the ORF, saying, "72 countries, 45 million viewers - in the entire world there is not another concert which can boast of such numbers. Only when conductor, orchestra, broadcaster and recording company work together in philharmonic harmony is such a success possible."
