OsterKlang Festival Concerts under Riccardo Muti

Upon the occasion of the 13th annual festival "OsterKlang Wien" on April 4/5, 2009, in the Golden Hall of the Musikverein, the Vienna Philharmonic performed Joseph Haydn's instrumental version of "The Seven Last Words of Christ", Hob. XX:1a, as well as, for the first time, the "Messa Solenne" in E major by Luigi Cherubini (1760-1842). Cherubini, who was a great admirer of Haydn and Mozart, was in turn highly respected by Beethoven. Riccardo Muti conducted the concerts which featured the Arnold Schönberg Chor (prepared by Erwin Ortner) and the soloists Ruth Ziesak (soprano), Marianna Pizzolato (mezzo soprano), Rainer Trost (tenor) and Alexey Tikhomirov (bass).
