Beethoven's 9th under Christian Thielemann

Due to the eruption of the volcano Eyjafjallajoküll, which resulted in the closure of European airspace, the orchestra could not travel to Luxembourg for the two planned performances of Beethoven's 9th Symphony, scheduled for April 16/17, 2010. In the following week the work was performed four times in Vienna under the baton of Christian Thielemann: in the 4th Philharmonic Soirée on April 19th, in the Main Auditorium of the Konzerthaus on April 22nd, as well as for two television concerts  in the Golden Hall of the Musikverein on April 24th and 25th.  The vocal soloists for these concerts were Annette Dasch, Fihoko Fujimura and Piotr Beczala, with the Chorus of the Society of Friends of Music in Vienna being prepared by Johannes Prinz; Robert Holl performed the first concerts while Georg Zeppenfeld took over the bass part for the television concerts. Peter Ruzicka's "… zurücknehmen… - Erinnerung für großes Orchester", a work commissioned by the Vienna Philharmonic which had its premiere at the 4th Soirée was performed two additional times on April 22nd and 25th. With the recording of the 9th Symphony, the "Beethoven9" project, which had begun in 2008, came to its conclusion, with the CD and DVD recordings of all the Beethoven symphonies to be released in the fall.
