Vienna Philharmonic in Hamburg

On January 18, 2001, the Vienna Philharmonic made a guest appearance in Hamburg with Mariss Jansons conducting compositions which had appeared on the program for a concert of the Society of the Friends of Music in the Golden Hall of the Musikverein on January 14, 2011, which was Janson's 68th birthday. These works included Gustav Mahler's "Songs of a Wayfarer" (with Thomas Hampson as soloist; the second song, "Ging heut' morgen übers Feld", was repeated as an encore) and Hector Berlioz', "Symphonie Fantastique". The concert closed with Jean Sibelius' "Valse triste" from the music to Arvid Järnefelt's drama "Kuolema".
