Vienna Philahrmoic at the Opera Ball

While the orchestra was on tour, there took place in Vienna (in addition to the home orchestra's being responsible for the opera performances and rehearsals) two notable Philharmonic activities. For the first time in its history the Vienna Philharmonic took part in the opening ceremonies for the 55th Opera Ball, which took place on March 3, 2011. For this spectacular annual event, General Director Franz Welser-Möst conducted the Overture to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's "Le Nozze di Figaro". Elina Garanca sang the aria "Mon coeur s' ouvre a toi voix" from "Samson & Delilah" by Camille Saint-Saens and "Wien, Wien, nur du allein" by Rudolf Sieczynski. The participation of the Vienna Philharmonic at the Opera Ball was an idea first expressed by ball organizer, Desiree Treichl-Stürgkh. This became the exceeding desire of Director Dominique Meyer, who presented the idea at the Philharmonic business meeting on October 20, 2010, where it was overwhelmingly approved with great enthusiasm.

Since 2003, the day following the Opera Ball has been given over to a special event. With the cooperation of the Vienna Philharmonic, two performances of "The Magic Flute" for children are performed at the Vienna State Opera. After Seiji Ozawa, who has conducted this production in the years 2003, 2005, 2008 and 2009, Bertrand de Billy (2004, 2010), Fabio Luisi (2006) und Ernst Märzendorfer (2007), Franz Welser-Möst assumed the direction for the first time on March 4, 2011. The 18 performances since the institution of this event have been attended by approximately 63,000 children.
