The program for the 6th Subscription Concert, in which Valerie Gergiev conducted compositions by Sergei Prokofiev, Pyotr I. Tchaikovsky, Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov and Rodion Schtschedrin on January 14/15, 2012, constituted a rarity in Philharmonic scheduling, being performed both before and afterward in other countries. This program was first performed on January 11th, as part of the traditional "Vienna Philharmonic Cycle" in Cologne and again on the following day in Hannover, where, since our first concert there on June 18, 1926 with Felix Weingartner, the orchestra has performed eleven times, the last of these having been on October 28, 1984 with Leonard Bernstein. The encore for these recent concerts in both cities was the fast polka "Ohne Sorgen" ("Without a Care"), op. 271, by Joseph Strauss.
Immediately following the Subscription Concert on Sunday, the orchestra left for a guest appearance in the Sultanate of Oman. On February 16th the program consisting entirely of works of Russian composers was performed in the Royal Opera House in Maskat, an edifice of impressive modern architectural conception possessing outstanding acoustics, built and opened the previous year by Sultan Qaboos, who is an acknowledged connoisseur of classical music. (The encores performed were "Ohne Sorgen"; as well as Johann Strauss' "Unter Donner und Blitz (Thunder and Lightning)", Fast Polka, op. 324).
