Daniel Ottensamer Accepted into the Vienna Philharmonic

Daniel Ottensamer

Daniel Ottensamer, who was born in Vienna on July 26, 1986, comes from a musical family "par excellence". His father, Ernst, has been a member of our orchestra since 1978; his mother, Cecilia, is a distinguished cello instructor; and his brother, Andreas, is a clarinettist with the Berlin Philharmonic! Daniel Ottensamer received instruction in piano beginning in 1992, and after two years took up the cello. He eventually changed to clarinet, which he initially studied with Anton Hafenscher at the Music School in Perchtoldsdorf. Following his high school diploma in 2004 he was accepted into the clarinet studio of Johann Hindler at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, completing his diploma with honourable mention there in 2009. On September 1st of that same year, he began his engagement as a first clarinettist of the Vienna State Opera Orchestra.

By this time Daniel Ottensamer had already attained considerable success by winning several prizes at various international clarinet competitions. These include the Grand Scholarship Competition of the Munich Concert Society in 2005; the Animato Foundation in Zurich in  2006; and the Carl Nielsen International Clarinet Competition in 2009. He also appeared as soloist with such orchestras as the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg, the Radio Orchestras of Cologne, Munich and Vienna, along with the Vienna Chamber Orchestra as well as the NHK Symphony Orchestra under the batons of Lorin Maazel, Adam Fischer, Ivor Bolton, Ralf Weikert and others. It goes without saying that he is also a dedicated chamber musician. He is a member of the Baole Quintet and The Philharmonics, and has performed in concert with Barbara Bonney, Bernarda Fink, Angelika Kirchschlager, Thomas Hampson, Clemens Hagen, Julian Rachlin and Stefan Vladar. In addition he belongs to a unique ensemble, the clarinet trio "Clarinotts", made up of Ernst, Daniel and Andreas Ottensamer.
