Vienna Philharmonic Ball 2014

The original planning was that at the conclusion of the tour, Riccardo Chailly would conduct the opening of the 73rd Vienna Philharmonic Ball on January 23, 2014. When Chailly was forced to cancel for personal reasons, a quick and unconventional solution was implemented by business manager Dr. Dieter Flury. Leonidas Kavakos conducted the overture from the opera "Oberon" by Carl Maria von Weber and performed the "Schön Rosmarin" by Fritz Kreisler. This was the first time in the long history of the Philharmonic Ball that a soloist was featured in the opening ceremonies.

Anton Mittermayr conducted the "Ausseer Fanfare" by Gottfried Ritter von Freiberg for the processional of the Honorary Committee as well as the "Vienna Philharmonic Fanfare" by Richard Strauss. During the evening in the Golden Hall the "Große Ballorchester Helmut Steubl" and the "Tom Henkes Dance Band" alternated and once again the ball featured an exceedingly varied musical program within the framework of the program for the ball: sixteen (Philharmonic) ensembles performed in the foyer, in the Glass Hall, Metallic Hall and the Gottfried von Einem Hall as well as in the orchestral dressing room. Ball Director Andreas Großbauer, who in spectacular fashion adapted the Glass Hall of the Musikverein into a "Makart Studio" which was highly acclaimed by the ball attendees, received active support of the partially new ball committee, to which in addition to Rotraut Konrad and Vienna State Opera Director Dominique Meyer, now also Madeleine Rohla-Strauss (the great-granddaughter of Richard Strauss) and Federal Minister Rudolf Hundstorfer belong. The preparation for the young women and young men of the Debutante Procession was once again in the capable hands of Professor Thomas Schäfer-Elmayer.
