The 3rd Soireé with Michael Tilson Thomas on December 8, 2014, was preceded by a concert the previous evening in Budapest at the Palast der Künste ("Müvészetek Palotája"), which includes a theater, a museum of the Ludwig Foundation and a concert hall, the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall). The program consisted of the Concerto for Contrabass and Orchestra in the D major version by Johann Baptist Vanhal, performed by our youngest principal bassist Ödön Rácz, who was born in Budapest. The program also included the Symphony No. 5 in C-sharp minor by Gustav Mahler.
This cultural complex, located in the southern ninth district of the city, Ferencváros, on the banks of the Danube near the Rákóczi-Bridge, was opened in 2005 and is notable in its architectural interaction between music, art and theater.
