The International Orchestra Institute Attergau is an annual summer course for music students from all over the world. It was founded by Prof. Wolfgang Schuster, then a member of the Vienna Philharmonic percussion section, in 1994 and has taken place in the idyllic countryside of the 'Attergau' ever since. The main goal of IOIA is to give young musicians insight into special traditions of orchestral playing, as preserved by the Vienna Philharmonic. Thus the repertoire of IOIA has a strong emphasis on music composed in Vienna, especially on the works of the First Viennese School. Furthermore, all sections of the orchestra are coached by members of the Vienna Philharmonic. The Institute Orchestra has performed several times at the Salzburg Festival and at other festivals in Austria, led by conductors such as Riccardo Muti, Mariss Jansons, Valery Gergiev, Christoph Eschenbach and many others.
