Vienna Philharmonic New Year's Concert 2009Daniel Barenboim
The traditional Vienna Philharmonic New Year's Concert on January 1, 2009, was conducted for the first time by the Argentinean-Israeli pianist and conductor Daniel Barenboim. This all-round musician, who debuted as a pianist with the Vienna Philharmonic in 1965 and conducted the orchestra for the first time in 1989, combines his musical abilities with ideas and gestures which give his work significance beyond the concert hall. Among the many awards Barenboim has received was the Ernst von Siemens Music Prize in Vienna in 2006, where the foundation's board of trustees noted his "unifying efforts toward peace in the Middle East".The New Year's Concert 2009 included numerous firsts, such as Daniel Barenboim making his debut as the conductor of the concert and the first performance of a piece by Joseph Haydn at the annual event. New was also the partnership with Rolex, which focuses primarily on the presentation of the New Year's Concert and the Sommernachtskonzert. Clemens Hellsberg and the ORF's director of cultural affairs, Martin Traxl, hope that the broadcast by the ORF, which took place for the first time 50 years ago, will continue for another half century. The New Year's Concert was broadcast in 71 countries, whereby 51 received the concert live and 17 saw the concert time-delayed on the same day. The unique atmosphere and world-wide coverage render the New Year's Concert incomparable to any other musical event.Program New Year's Concert 2009Read Daniel Barenboim's thoughts on conducting the New Year's Concert here.
