At nearly the same time that the announcement of the partnership with ROLEX was being made public, another agreement was signed with Austrian Broadcasting (ORF) regarding the New Year's Concert and the Concert in Schönbrunn. Intensive and comprehensive negotiations over a six month period preceded this agreement and led to a result which, despite occasional irritations was characterized by Professor Wolfgang Lorenz, Program Director for Television, as having produced "all winners and no losers", which had always been the goal of the Philharmonic.
When ORF Executive Director Dr. Alexander Wrabetz maintains that for the ORF, "the Vienna Philharmonic, as one of Austria's most outstanding cultural institutions is an indispensable component" of ORF's cultural mission, and he is "proud that despite the prophecies of doom in the Austrian media over the past months we can look forward to continuing our successful cooperation in the coming years", and when Program Director Prof. Wolfgang Lorenz stresses the fact that for the ORF, it goes without saying that the "quality and standards of both concerts are to be maintained and improved upon", then the expectations of the Philharmonic have been fulfilled. The orchestra is pleased to continue a partnership which has lasted through fifty televised broadcasts of the New Year's Concert since January 1, 1959 (the concert itself was initiated in 1941, and radio broadcasts began six years before the first television broadcast). We are also pleased that the ORF will continue to produce and broadcast the Concert in Schönbrunn, an event which was initiated in 2004 and in four concerts has attracted more than 350,000 concert goers. We thank ORF and T.E.A.M. Marketing AG for making the effort to work with us in developing innovative new ways of presenting these major Austrian cultural events, and thus making a further contribution to the securing of classical music in our society.- Dr. Clemens Hellsberg
