Under the baton of Daniel Harding who was filling in on short notice due to the illness of the Vienna State Opera's Music Director, Seiji Ozawa, the Vienna Philharmonic performed a concert for the Society of Friends of Music in Vienna on June 19, 2009. The program consisted of Karl Maria Weber's Overture to "Freischütz", "Death and Resurrection" from "Black Rain" by Tôru Takemitsu, and the Overture, Notturno and Scherzo from "Ein Sommernachtstraum" by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. The program closed with the Symphony No. 2 in D major, op. 73, by Johannes Brahms. This program was repeated two days later in the large hall of the Konzerthaus as part of the Vienna Festival Weeks, as well as on June 22 in the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris, at which time Jean Sibelius' "Valse triste", from the music to Arvid Järnefelts drama "Kuolema", was performed as an encore.
In addition to this, a school concert took place on the morning of June 19th as part of a long-standing arrangement with the Konzerthaus, also featuring selections from the "Sommernachtstraum" music on the program.
