In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the death of Gustav Mahler on May 18, 2011, the Vienna Philharmonic paid tribute to its former subscription concert conductor with a performance of his 9th Symphony under the baton of Daniele Gatti. This composition has special historical significance for the orchestra. On June 26, 1912, a little more than a year after the composer's death, the Vienna Philharmonic had premiered this composition as part of a "Vienna Music Festival Week" with Bruno Walter conducting. At the request of Director Dominique Meyer, this concert took place in the Vienna State Opera, formerly the Court Opera, where Gustav Mahler was director from 1897-1907.
Because the Vienna Philharmonic and Daniele Gatti waived their fees and the Austrian Federal Theaters requested no financial remuneration, the entire proceeds from the concert in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of Gustav Mahler's death could be donated to the Japanese Red Cross for the victims of the disaster which occurred on March 11, 2011.
