Professor Robert Scheiwein
In addition to the orchestra, Robert Scheiwein was an eminently successful chamber musician, both at home and abroad, with the Young Vienna Trio and the Boskovsky and Weller Quartets. As Philharmonic principal cellist he constantly set new standards, and his artistic authority and leadership qualities were undisputed. His performance of Brahms' Double Concerto for Violin and Cello with Rainer Küchl under the baton of Riccardo Muti remains unforgettable for all who were able to experience it, as was the solo in Richard Strauss' "Frau ohne Schatten". He was a "Philharmoniker with heart and soul", wrote the Kurier newspaper in its obituary of August 1, 2011, "who died on the evening of the premiere of an opera which he himself had performed in a legendary manner." In his ceaseless quest for artistic perfection he never shied away from a confrontation and in so doing make an enduring contribution to the persona of our orchestra.Clemens Hellsberg:Abschied von Robert Scheiwein
