Concerts in Theater an der Wien

On March 31/April 1, 2012, as part of the Festival OsterKlang, the Vienna Philharmonic performed two compositions by Ludwig van Beethoven in the venue where they were originally premiered. At the Theater an der Wien, Philippe Jordan conducted the Symphony No. 2 in D major, op. 36, and the oratorio for soloists, choir and orchestra, "Christus am Ölberg (Christ on the Mount of Olives)", op. 85. Beethoven had introduced both of these compositions himself (in addition to his Piano Concerto No. 3) at an academy concert that he presented at this historic theatre.

Beethoven's seldom-performed oratorio had appeared only twice previously on the program of the Vienna Philharmonic - on March 29, 1894, conducted by Hermann Grädener and on April 12, 1950, conducted by Clemens Krauss. For this year's performances, the singers were Johan Botha (Christ), Gerald Finley (Peter) and Camilla Nylund (Seraph), as well as the Arnold Schoenberg Chorus, prepared by Erwin Ortner.
