Prof. Reinhard Öhlberger
As in past summers, the "Angelika Prokopp Summer Academy of the Vienna Philharmonic" under the capable leadership of orchestra member Prof. Michael Werba was held during the Salzburg Festival. The objectives of this training seminar the promotion and education of the next generation of orchestral musicians. Between January and May 2014, the young instrumentalists were selected and invited through auditions by for a Philharmonic jury. Within the framework of this program there were 50 students chosen to participate, some of whom still studying and others who had already completed their work at Austrian Music Universities. They took part in intensive master classes and workshops from a total of 30 members of the Vienna Philharmonic. The highpoint of the summer came on August 16th, when in the concert hall of the University in Salzburg a concert marathon consisting of three sessions of two hours apiece in which the fruits of these labors were presented. In total, 26 chamber music works by 22 different composers were performed in various combinations from trio to nonet.
The hopeful young orchestra protégées took part in the Salzburg Festival in 26 opera performances, by working as stage musicians in four different productions - "Don Giovanni", "Il Trovatore", "Der Rosenkavallier" and Fierrabras". This also helped the young musicians to gain experience in the world of the opera. On October 11, a continuation and additional highpoint for the various young musical groups took place at a matinee concert in the Gustav Mahler Hall in the Vienna State Opera in which music was presented which had been previously prepared in the summer. Selections from works by Georges Auric, Alexander Borodin, Gabriel Fauré, Jean Fracaix, Joseph Lanner, Bohuslav Martinu, Franz Schubert and Richard Strauss were performed. The Philharmonic colleagues involved in this endeavor were Christian Frohn, Johann Hindler, Pavel Kuzmichev, Herbert Mayr, Robert Nagy, Alexander Öhlberger, Gerald Schubert, Günter Seifert and Michael Werba.
