Johannes Brahms Project with Christoph Eschenbach

A Johannes Brahms project was the center of activity for the Vienna Philharmonic in the first half of April 2015. Christoph Eschenbach was the conductor of this intensive period of involvement which also included the violinists Leonidas Kavakos and Christian Tetzlaff. The programs included the 5th Soirée with the Violin Concerto and Fourth Symphony and another program featuring the First and Second Symphonies in various combinations. The Symphony No. 2 in D major, op. 73, and the Symphony No. 4 in E minor, op. 98, were played on April 14th in Paris at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées. These were followed by a double encore consisting of two of the Hungarian Dances – No. 20 in E minor and 21 in E Major, in the instrumentation by Antonín Dvořák, which were performed as "one". On the next day, the Violin Concerto in D major, op. 77, with Leonidas Kavakos, along with the Symphony No. 1 in C minor, op. 68, and an encore of the Hungarian Dance No. 1 in G minor were performed.

The tour continued on Friday, April 17th, with a program of the Violin Concerto and the Symphony No. 1 at the Brucknerhaus in Linz. Leonidas Kavakos was in all instances generous with his encores. In Paris, he performed the Third Movement from the Third Solosonata in C major by Johann Sebastian Bach as well as the Sarabande from the Partita in D minor. In Linz, he played the "Recuerdos de la Alhambra", originally for guitar, in an exceptionally virtuosic arrangement for violin by Ruggiero Ricci.
