The Historical Archives of the Vienna Philharmonic will offer lectures during the orchestra's concert tour which provide insights into the unique history of the Vienna Philharmonic which will also include recently discovered information from the archives and other institutions. The focus will be on the memorial year 2018.
In cooperation with the Austrian Cultural Forum New York, the Jewish Museum Vienna and the Haus der Musik in Vienna, a "Tribute to Leonard Bernstein" will be presented in honor of the 100th anniversary of the birth of the great conductor, composer, pianist and educator on February 25, 2018. In addition to members of the Vienna Philharmonic performing Mozart's Clarinet Quintet in A major, Dr. Silvia Kargl, research associate of the Vienna Philharmonic Historical Archives and Dr. Friedemann Pestel, historian at the Albert Ludwig University in Freiburg, will present new research findings on Leonard Bernstein and the Vienna Philharmonic. Also to be presented will be the concept for an exhibition planned for October 2018 at the Jewish Museum and the Haus der Musik in Vienna with the title "Bernstein. A New Yorker in Vienna".
As part of the Vienna Philharmonic Residency in Naples, Florida, Dr. Kargl and Dr. Pestel will present two lectures. The first presentation on February 26, 2018, is dedicated to Leonard Bernstein and the Vienna Philharmonic, while the second, on February 28, 2018, is entitled "Ambivalent Loyalties – The Vienna Philharmonic between National Socialism and Post-War Austria".
On March 3, 2018, as part of a series of events entitled "Historias Cruzadas México – Austria" of the Austrian Cultural Forum in Mexico, Dr. Kargl and Dr. Pestel will discuss the memorial year 1938 and its consequences for the Vienna Philharmonic (in Spanish).
"Geschichtskreuzungen: Mexiko-Österreich" is an interdisciplinary project of the Austrian Cultural Forum in in Mexico with the aim of opening new perspectives on various key events in the mutual historiography of the Austrian and Mexican Republics. The series treats the Wars of Reform in the 19th century, the reign and influence of Emperor Maximilian I in Mexico, the Mexican Revolution, the ascendancy of neo-liberalism in the 1980s and the emergence of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation in the 1990s. Also illuminated will be the efforts of the government of President Lázaro Cárdenas in the struggle against Francoism and National Socialism which resulted in Mexico's protest at the League of Nations against the Anschluss of Austria to Germany in 1938.
On March 10, 2018, as part of the appearances of the Vienna Philharmonic in Buenos Aires, a memorial plaque will be unveiled in remembrance of Philharmonic clarinetist Franz Behrends, who died and was buried in the German Cemetery in Buenos Aires during a Vienna Philharmonic tour to South America in August 1923.
