Partnership with prima la musica-Wien

New Directions in Promoting Young Musical Talent

The Vienna Philharmonic under its Chairman Daniel Froschauer took over the patronage of the talent promotion program of the Viennese state competition prima la musica-Wien in May 2019. The common goal is to support highly talented prizewinners of the renowned youth music competition prima la musica-Vienna on their way to a professional music career and in particular to promote young orchestral talent.

Johannes Kostner, violinist of the Vienna Philharmonic, who has strongly supported this idea from the very beginning, was nominated as contact person and coordinator. The basic idea developed by Johannes Kostner and Angelika Persterer-Ornig is to bring together highly talented string players between the ages of 14 and 19 in various ensembles, which are then conducted by members of the Vienna Philharmonic.

Since the inception of the partnership, the following ensembles have been formed:

CAMERATA prima la musica WIEN: This ensemble, founded in February 2020, consists of 17 string players and is directed and conducted by Harald Krumpöck (violinist of the Vienna Philharmonic). After an intensive rehearsal phase (one-week music camp), the first concerts took place in August 2020 with great success and media coverage.

Violin Quartet: Under the direction of Johannes Kostner, the violin quartet has already performed several very successful concerts since its foundation in 2019. Prima la musica-Vienna commissioned Aleksey Igudesman and Andreas Wykydal to compose two compositions for the violin quartet in summer 2020.

String Quartet: Under the direction of Tamás Varga (principal cellist of the Vienna Philharmonic) a string quartet was founded in February 2020. The musical work was continued online during the time of the Corona Pandemic in order to ensure the very high level aimed at the concerts.

Piano Trio: Rehearsals started in January 2020, also under the direction of Tamás Varga.

String Duos: Two duos in the instrumentation violin and cello as well as two violins are under the musical direction of Volkhard Steude (Concertmaster of the Vienna Philharmonic) and also celebrated their heavily acclaimed debuts in August 2020.

Additional concerts with all ensembles are currently in planning.

"It is all about learning the musical craft, preserving traditions, passing on the specific playing style and sound culture, and exchanging experience and knowledge passed on from generation to generation. We see it as our task to accompany our young artists to a certain extent and to support them so that they can continue on their successful path"
Daniel Froschauer, Chairman of the Vienna Philharmonic
