Dance and Music 21st Century

"By the end of the project, music had become something completely normal, as if it were a part of everyday life!"

Ulrike, age 11

This was precisely the goal of the passwort:klassik musical education project on "Eclair sur l’au-delà", the last orchestral composition of Olivier Messiaen. Students in levels 1 – 8 of the Theresianum High School in Vienna spent an intensive two week period delving deeply into the music of Oliver Messiaen. As expected, the music at first seemed strange, unusual, angular and bizarre. No one could imagine doing things like working on their own choreography to such sounds, playing improvisations based on bird calls, rehearsing a love song for string instruments, or adding a trumpet solo to a solemn chorale.

Yet with the aid of the choreographer Wilfried van Poppel from Bremen, four musicians of the Vienna Philharmonic, and several music instructors, it proved possible to remove the student's reservations about dealing with modern music. At the end of the workshop sessions, the students presented their own moving 21st century version of Olivier Messiaen's "Eclair sur l’au-delà".
