80th Birthday Celebration for Christa Ludwig

On March 16, 2008, Kammersängerin Christa Ludwig, who holds the Silver Rose and is an Honorary Member of the Vienna Philharmonic, celebrated her 80th birthday. For this occasion the Vienna Philharmonic, together with the Friends of the Vienna State Opera, held an event on March 30, 2008 in the Brahmssaal of the Musikverein. Following the opening address spoken by Director Dr. Thomas Angyan, the "Laudatio" given by Philharmonic chairman Dr. Clemens Hellsberg and greetings from Zubin Mehta, also an honorary member of the Philharmonic, an interview with Christa Ludwig was held by Dr. Thomas Dänemark, the general secretary of the Friends of the Vienna State Opera. The proceedings were interspersed with musical selections, as Rainer Küchl, Daniel Froschauer, Heinrich Koll, Innokenti Grabko and Gerhard Iberer played the third and fourth movements from Mozart's String Quartet in G Minor, KV 516. They were then joined by the mezzo soprano Elisabeth Kulman and principal contrabass Christoph Wimmer to perform the Recitative and Aria of Orpheus from "Orpheus und Eurydike" by Christoph Willibald Gluck.
