Verdi Requiem under Riccardo Muti

On June 7/8, 2008, two Vienna Festival concerts took place in the Golden Hall of the Musikverein with the Vienna Philharmonic performing Giuseppi Verdi's  "Messa da requiem" under the baton of Riccardo Muti. The vocal soloists were Barbara Frittoli (soprano), Luciana d'Intino (alto), Ramón Vargas (tenor) and Thomas Quasthoff (bass), as well as the Chorus of the Society of Friends of Music in Vienna prepared by Johannes Prinz. Each performance was part of a different series, with the first concert part of the Riccardo Muti Cycle, and the second part of the Herbert von Karajan Cycle of the Society of Friends of Music. Herbert von Karajan, honorary conductor of the Vienna Philharmonic, whose 100th birthday is being celebrated this year, conducted the Verdi Requiem with our orchestra eight times between the years of 1948 and 1984.
