Banquets and Receptions at the Imperial Residence

On June 29, 2008, upon the occasion of the finale of the European Football Championship, Austrian President Dr. Heinz Fischer and Prime Minister Dr. Alfred Gusenbauer gave a reception in the Vienna Imperial Residence in honour of  Swiss President Pascal Couchepin and UEFA President Michael Platini. During the reception the Vienna Violin Quartet performed Josef Lanner's waltz "Abendsterne" and the fast polka "Im Sturmschritt" by Johann Strauss, Jr.

At a banquet given on July 3, 2008 in the Vienna Imperial Residence by Austrian President Dr. Heinz Fischer during the state visit of President Karolos Papoulias of Greece, the musical entertainment was provided by members of the Vienna Philharmonic. Milan Setena, Daniel Froschauer, Erich Schagerl (viola) and Tamás Varga performed the 2nd and 4th movements from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's "Dissonanzen"-Quartett in C Major, KV 465.

Between these official state events there was also an event of a more private nature. On July 1, 2008, the Vienna Red Cross held a party to celebrate the 80th birthday of their honorary president, Dr. Gustav Teicht, who for many years has served as counsel for the Vienna Philharmonic. Erich Schagerl, Milan Šetena, Matthias Reissner (viola) and Eckart Schwarz-Schulz played, in  addition to several movements from Mozart's Divertimenti in D Major, KV 136, and F Major, KV 138, and  the Variations on "Happy Birthday" by Peter Heidrich,  a commissioned work by Erich Schagerl, "If Beethoven had Composed a Csardas".
