On January 20, 2011, the 70th annual Vienna Philharmonic Ball will be held in the elegant surroundings of the Musikverein in Vienna. As in past years, the Philharmonic itself will perform at the ball's opening, this year playing the waltz "Künstlerleben", by Johann Strauss, Jr., under the baton of Daniele Gatti.

As soon as the dancers of the opening committee under the Direction of Prof. Thomas Schäfer-Elmayer clear the floor, guests at the ball will be treated to the the big band sound of the "Tom Henkes Dance Band" as well as the most beautiful waltz melodies performed by the "Prof. Helmut Steubl Ball Orchestra" for their listening and dancing enjoyment.

Musical diversity will be offered over the course of six hours in the music lounge, with members of the Philharmonic providing much of the entertainment, showcasing their skills in a variety of musical genres. Under the name of "The Philharmonics", seven virtuoso members of the orchestra present classics, klezmer and latin jazz directed by first violinist Tibor Kovac. There will also be a world premiere of a composition by René Staar, long-standing member of the orchestra, which will be complemented by a pantomimic presentation of actor and director Markus Kupferblum. The quartet "Faltenradio" of principal clarinetist Matthias Schorn features a meeting of the Styrian harmonica and clarinet.

A special guest appearance will be made by "Die Dornrosen", three sisters from Styria who delight their audiences with the finest musical cabaret. Opportunities for dancing and additional musical entertainment will be available throughout the entire Musikverein - from jazz, to heurigen music to DJ sounds, there will be something going on for every taste and mood.
