70th Vienna Philharmonic Ball

The 70th Vienna Philharmonic Ball took place on January 20, 2011 in the Musikverein, and featured two premieres. Daniele Gatti, who had made his conducting debut with the Vienna Philharmonic in February 2005, conducted the opening of the ball for the first time, performing the waltz "Künstlerleben", op. 316 by Johann Strauss. This was also the first ball under the new ball committee made up of Kammersängerin Marjana Lipovsek, Dr. Hannes Androsch und Vienna State Opera Director Dominique Meyer, which took over from Eva Angyan, who for twenty years has placed her indelible stamp on this important society event. Once again Andreas Großbauer was the ball manager, who this year expanded the musical program to include 25 performances by 14 different ensembles. In the Golden Hall, the entertainment was provided by the Helmut Steubl Ball Orchestra and the Tom Henkes Dance Band. For the traditional entry procession of the honored guests, Karl Jeitler conducted the "Ausseer Fanfare" by Gottfried von Freiberg and the "Vienna Philharmonic Fanfare" by Richard Strauss.
