2010/11 Season Ends with Tour

The Philharmonic Season 2010/2011 concluded with a brief concert tour. On June 20, 2011, the orchestra made its third guest appearance, following 1966 with Leonard Bernstein and 1968 with Karl Böhm, in Monte Carlo. At this time, Prince Albert II of Monaco and his sister Princess Carolina were in attendance and invited the orchestra to a post-concert reception.

The next day, the Philharmonic performed for the first time in the arena at Aspendos. This concert, taking place in the nearly 2,000 year-old, world-famous Roman theatre known for its outstanding acoustic and atmosphere, was broadcast by the Turkish television network. Zubin Mehta conducted both of the afore-mentioned evenings with the program from last year's "Nicolai" concerts, which was comprised of the Symhony in Three Movements by Igor Strawinsky; Ludwig van Beethoven's Third Piano Concerto in C minor, op. 37 (soloist: Daniel Barenboim); and Richard Strauss' "Don Quixote" (soloists: Franz Bartolomey and Heinrich Koll). Two of the most popular fast polkas from Johann Strauss, Jr. were played as encores: "Tritsch Tratsch", op. 214 and "Unter Donner und Blitz", op. 324.
