On April 13, 2012, in the Vienna Konzerthaus, the Vienna Philharmonic performed under the baton of Sir Antonio Pappano not only Joseph Haydn's Symphony in E-flat Major, Hob. I:22 and the 4th Symphony by Johannes Brahms, but also premiered a work by Jörg Widmann: "Teufel Amor, Symphonic Hymn after Schiller". This program was repeated for the 9th Philharmonic Subscription Concert on April 14/15, 2012.
The 4th Philharmonic Soirée on April 20, 2012, featured Christian Thielemann conducting a Schumann Program which included the Overture, Scherzo and Finale in E major, op. 52; the Symphony No. 1 in B-flat major, op. 38 (the only work which Schumann personally conducted with our orchestra on January 1, 1847); the Fantasy for Violin and Orchestra in A-minor, op. 131, featuring Rainer Küchl as soloist; and the Symphony No. 4 in D minor, op 120. This program was repeated one day later as part of the cycle "Das Goldene Musikvereinsabonnement II".
Also in April 2012, the Vienna Philharmonic made an 8-day European tour performing the compositions presented on the 9th Subscription Concerts and 4th Philharmonic Soirée. Christian Tielemann conducted on April 12th, 13th, 27th, and 30th in Paris, Luxemburg, Baden-Baden and Athens respectively, while Sir Antonio Pappano took the baton for concerts in Cologne and Athens on April 25th and 29th. Pappano also led a young person's concert on the morning of April 29th in Athens, where he conducted and elucidated the Haydn Symphony and the last two movements from Brahms' Fourth Symphony.
