Austrian President Dr. Heinz Fischer honoured one of the truest friends of our orchestra and of the musical land of Austria with a distinguished award: Mr. Alfonso Aijón, who last year celebrated his 80th birthday, was presented with the Austrian Honorary Cross of Science and the Arts, 1st Class. Alfonso Aijón founded the music agency "Ibermúsica" in 1970 and since then has brought, in addition to the Vienna Philharmonic, numerous Austrian ensembles (Vienna Symphony, Concentus Musicus Vienna, Camerata Academica Salzburg, Mozarteum Orchestra, Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra) to Spain and dedicates himself to this day tothe development of a deep-rooted connection between these orchestras and the Iberian Peninsula.
The presentation of this award took place on the part of Ambassador Dr. Rudolf Lennkh on September 28, 2012, in the Austrian Embassy in Madrid in the presence of the Spanish Minister of Justice, Alberto Ruiz Gallardón, and numerous personalities from Spain's cultural and musical life. It was a special wish of the Vienna Philharmonic to offer Alfonso Aijón musical congratulations at this ceremony, as Dieter Flury, Rainer Honeck, Robert Bauerstatter and Robert Nagy performed Mozart's Flute Quartet in D major, KV 285.
