The Marietta and Friedrich Torberg Medal was first awarded by the Jewish Community (Israelitische Kultusgemeinde) of Vienna in 1987. On May 29th, this award was presented to Prof. DrDr. H.C.Schütz - Rector of the Medical University of Vienna - and to the Chairman of the Vienna Philharmonic, Prof. Dr. Clemens Hellsberg, in a ceremony in the Gustav Mahler Hall of the Vienna State Opera. The laudatory address for Dr. Hellsberg was given by Maestro Zubin Mehta.
The Marietta and Friedrich Torberg Medal, which was first awarded in 1987, is bestowed upon individuals or institutions that have championed an open and animated Austrian democracy or taken a stand against the reawakening of national-socialistic demons.
