Concerts with Daniel Barenboim

On May 23/24, 2012, in the Golden Hall of the Musikverein, Daniel Barenboim conducted the fifth Philharmonic Soirée and a concert for the Society of Friends of Music as part of the cycle "Meisterinterpreten II". In the first half, Michael Barenboim performed the Concerto for Violin and Orchestra, op. 36 by Arnold Schönberg. After the intermission, two works by Claude Debussy, "Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune" and "La Mer", completed the program. Originally Pierre Boulez was scheduled to conduct both of these concerts, but this Honorary Member of our orchestra was forced to cancel for reasons of health. Originally, Daniel Barenboim had been scheduled to perform Schönberg's Piano Concerto but upon his cancellation, Pierre Boulez recommended Michael Barenboim as soloist for Schönberg's Violin Concerto. This proved to be a unique constellation in the orchestra's history. The Philharmonic first performances of the two instrumental concertos of Arnold Schönberg were given by father and son. It was Daniel Barenboim who performed Schönberg's Piano Concerto, op. 42, under the baton of Pierre Boulez on June 4/5, 2005, and Michael Barenboim who performed the Violin Concerto on May 23/24, 2012.
