Dr. Clemens Hellsberg
On February 20, 2013, the Vienna Philharmonic, along with conductor Franz Welser-Möst, left on a tour consisting of seven concerts in Germany, Toronto and New York. It began with an evening in the "Alte Oper" in Frankfurt performing the Overture to the Operetta "Dichter und Bauer (Poet and Peasant)" by Franz von Suppé, Franz Schubert's 6th Symphony in C major, D 589, and Antonín Dvořák's 7th Symphony in D minor, op. 70. The encores were Dvořák's Slavonic Dance in E minor, op. 72/2 and Josef Strauss' Fast Polka "Gallopin", op. 237. On February 21st in the Philharmonic Hall in Cologne, Alban Berg's Violin Concerto ("Dem Andenken eines Engels" - "To the Memory of an Angel") featuring Frank Peter Zimmermann as soloist, and Anton Bruckner's 4th Symphony were performed. Two days later the "Romantic Symphony" of this Upper Austrian composer was repeated in Baden-Baden, this time being preceeded by Schubert's 6th Symphony.
The next concert took place on February 27, 2013, in Toronto. In the Roy Thompson Hall, Franz Welser-Möst conducted the 6th Symphony by Franz Schubert, Jörg Widmann's "Lied" and the tone poem "Till Eulenspiegels Lustige Streiche" of Richard Strauss, with the "Kiss Waltz" op. 400, by Johann Strauss as an encore. The concert in Canada was followed by the "Vienna Philharmonic Week in New York", which took place this year for the 25th time and consisting of the three traditional concerts in Carnegie Hall. On March 1st a variant of the Frankfurt program was presented. Instead of Schubert's 6th Symphony, Herbert Lippert sang songs by Richard Strauss ("Ich Liebe Dich", op. 37/2, "Liebeshymnus", op. 32/3, "Verführung, op. 33/1, "Winterliebe, op. 48/5, with an encore of "Freudliche Vision, op. 48/1). The next day the program from Toronto was repeated along with the " Kiss Waltz" as an encore. The final concert on March 3rd consisted of Berg's Violin Concerto as well as Bruckner's 4th Symphony.
