Dr. Clemens Hellsberg

First Appearances in Yerevan and Ukraine

The season's 9th Subscription Concert (April 6/7, 2013) was also followed by a tour, at which time Michael Tilson Thomas made his debut in our subscription series with Arnold Schönberg's, Theme and Variations for Orchestra, op. 43b; Johannes Brahms', Piano Concerto No. 2 in B-flat major, op. 83, (with Yefim Bronfman as soloist) and Brahms' Piano Quartet No. 1 in G minor, op. 25, in the orchestration by Arnold Schönberg. The first stop in our tour on April 9th was the Royal Festival Hall in London.

The next two concerts, which featured Franz Schubert's Overture to "Die Zauberharfe" (The Magic Harp) in place of the Schönberg Variations, were a milestone in our history, being the first time the orchestra performed in Armenia and the Ukraine. The performance in theAram Khachaturian Hall in Yerevan was broadcast on national television and, due to extremely high interest in this event, was preceded by an open rehearsal. For an encore in all three cities the Hungarian Dance No. 1 in G minor by Johannes Brahms was played and in Kiev the fast polka "Èljen a Magyàr" op. 332 of Johann Strauss, Jr. was also added.
