Dr. Clemens Hellsberg
The 7th Subscription Concert of the season, in which Honorary Member, Zubin Mehta, conducted Anton Bruckner's 8th Symphony on March 16/17, 2013, was a continuation of a series of concerts which began on March 8th with a rehearsal for the Jeunesse. A concert of the Society of Friends of Music on March 10th was followed by a European tour which was to include four concerts. The beginning went according to plan with a concert on March 11th in Brussels, at which time, in remembrance of the second anniversary of the natural and environmental catastrophe of Fukushima, John Sibelius' "Scene with Cranes", op. 44/2, was performed before Bruckner's monumental work.
On March 12th at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, a repeat performance of the 8th Symphony had been scheduled but had to be cancelled due to heavy snowfall which made the journey from Brussels to Paris impossible. Therefore the orchestra had to remain for an additional night in the Belgian capital and Simone Iberer, head of our business office, was magnificent in managing to accomplish unexpected hotel arrangements for the orchestra members. The day afterwards, weather conditions had improved enough to allow us an uneventful bus trip to our concert in Luxembourg. The conclusion of this short but somewhat dramatic tour consisted of a performance of Bruckner's 8th Symphony in Essen.
