The Vienna Philharmonic's participation in the Mozart Festival in Salzburg, which began directly after the orchestra's annual ball should not give the impression that the enchantments of a night of waltzing can be easily transferred from the banks of the Danube to those of the Salzach: quite the contrary!
On Friday, the 24th of January two substantial rehearsals were scheduled for the afternoon and evening in the Large Festival Hall of the Salzburg Festspielhaus in preparation for the concert to take place the following evening. Nikolaus Harnocourt conducted a program of works by Franz Schubert consisting of the overture "Die Zauberharfe" D644, the Symphony No. 6 in C major, D589, and the Symphony No. 7 in B minor, the "Unfinished", D 759.
The second Philharmonic concert for the Mozart Week on January 28th was conducted by Andrés Orozco-Estrada, to whom we are particularly grateful for his stepping in twice for us recently on short notice). Orozco-Estrada conducted Franz Schubert's Symphony No. 1 in D major, D 82, followed by Schubert's Arpeggione Sonata in the concerto arrangement in A minor for Violincello and Orchestra by Gaspar Cassadó (featuring the soloist Gautier Capuçon). After the intermission two additional symphonies were performed: first, Wolfgang Amadeus's Symphony No. 1 in E-flat Majo,r KV16, followed by the Symphony No. 1 by Elliott Carter, a well-known American composer with an impressive life span (1908 - 2012). For an encore, Gautier Capuçon performed Pablo Casals' "Elcant dels ocells (Songs of the Birds)".
The third and final concert of this year's Mozart Festival took place on January 31st and was conducted by Thomas Hengelbrock, with whom our orchestra had never previously collaborated. The program was comprised entirely of works of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Between two of his Symponies, No. 29 in A major, KV 201, and the "Jupiter Symphony" in C major, KV551, Marina Rebeka (substituting for Diana Damrau) performed three arias: "Vado, ma dove? O Dei!" KV 583; the Recitative and Aria "E Susanna non vien" - "Dove sono i bei momenti" from "The Marriage of Figaro", KV 492/20; and lastly the Recitative and Aria "Crudele!" - "No mi dir, bel' idol mio" from "Don Giovanni", KV 527/Nr. 23.
