The new Vienna Philharmonic concert season begins with a European tour which takes the orchestra to Birmingham, London, Lucerne and Bucarest with two conductors, Semyon Bychkov and Simon Rattle. One highlight of this tour will be the second to last evening of the BBC Proms on September 11, 2015, in which Simon Rattle will conduct Edward Elgar’s "The Dream of Gerontius". In October, the orchestra embarks on an extended tour of Asia which includes not only the traditional Vienna Philharmonic Week in Japan, but also concerts in Seoul, Taipei and Singapore. The next major tour in February/March 2016 takes the orchestra to the USA for concerts in New York and Naples (Florida) as well to South America for appearances in Bogotà und Sao Paolo under Valery Gergiev. There will also be an ocean cruise in May 2016.
The Subscription Concert Series 2015-16 features two prominent artistic debuts. The long-anticipated debut of Kirill Petrenko takes place in April 2016, when he will conduct, among other compositions, Mahler's "Das Lied von der Erde" with Elisabeth Kulman and Johan Botha. The regularly scheduled debut of Andrés Orozco-Estrada in June 2016 will feature the Violin Concerto No. 4 of Henri Vieuxtemps, performed by Hilary Hahn. The subscription concerts will also include the premiere of the Concerto for Three Clarinets by Iván Eröd - with Ernst, Daniel and Andreas Ottensamer as soloists - in January 2016 and the premiere of Thomas Larcher's Concerto for Orchestra in June 2016. Noteworthy are also the programs of the concerts of Christian Thielemann with Tchaikovsky's "Pathéthique" in December 2015 and of Esa-Pekka Salonen in May 2016, which will also feature Lisa Batiashvili's debut with the Vienna Philharmonic. Overall, season ticket holders will be treated to a diversified program of 27 different composers, of which only Haydn and Beethoven appear more than once.
An additional highlight of the season will be the Gala Concert for the 80th birthday of the Philharmonic's Honorary Member Zubin Mehta, which will include Daniel Barenboim as pianist, on April 29, 2016. Always worthy of mention are the Vienna Philharmonic's two annual major media media events - the New Year's Concert 2016 with Mariss Jansons and the Summer Night Concert 2016 with Semyon Bychkov, which will feature also Katia und Mariella Labèque as soloists.
