Highlights of the 2016/17 Concert Season

At the beginning of the new season, Emmanuelle Haïm will conduct the Vienna Philharmonic for the first time at the Lucerne Festival as well as in the Theater an der Wien.

As part of the annual Vienna Philharmonic Week in Japan, the orchestra celebrates the 30th anniversary of Suntory Hall with an extraordinary Gala Concert on October 1, 2016, under the baton of conductors Zubin Mehta and Seiji Ozawa. Appearing on this program as soloists will be Anne-Sophie Mutter and Chen Reis.

Following the world premiere of Peter Eötvös' Halleluja – Oratorium balbulum at the Salzburg Festival in 2016, the composer will conduct the work himself in the Vienna Konzerthaus and in Budapest in November 2016. Numerous concerts scheduled with Rudolf Buchbinder in this season demonstrate the close artistic collaboration the Vienna Philharmonic has enjoyed with this artist over the years. A special highlight of this series will be the 2nd Philharmonic Soireé on December 1, 2016, which takes place on Buchbinder's 70th birthday.

The New Year's Concert 2017 will be conducted for the first time by Gustavo Dudamel, making him the youngest conductor in the history of this special event.

In the opening weeks of the Hamburg's new Elbphilharmonie, the Vienna Philharmonic performs concerts under the direction of Ingo Metzmacher which will feature compositions by Webern, Hartmann and Shostakovich. As part of the orchestra's annual appearances in the USA, concerts will be given in Carnegie Hall in New York, Chapel Hill, NC and Naples, FL under the baton of Franz Welser-Möst. Among the Philharmonic Subscription Concerts, the debut of the Austrian-Chinese violinist Zizu He with Bartók's Violin Concerto No. 2 conducted by Adam Fischer is a particular highlight. Finally, the popular annual Summer Night Concert Schönbrunn will be conducted in May 2017 by Christoph Eschenbach.
