Michael Barenboim and Schönberg's Violin Concerto

Michael Barenboim, the soloist for the 5th Philharmonic Soirée, was born in Paris on September 21, 1985 and received his first violin lessons in Berlin from Abraham Jaffe at the age of seven and as of 2000 from Axel Wilczok, concertmaster of the Staatskapelle Berlin. Since 2003, he has been the concertmaster of the "West Eastern Divan Orchestra", a unique initiative furthering reconciliation and peace which was founded by Daniel Barenboim.
In addition to numerous solo appearances in Europe, South America and in the Near East, Michael Barenboim dedicates himself intensively to chamber music. He is the founder of the "Erlenbusch Quartet", gives concerts with Guy Braunstein, Nikolai Znaider and Daniel Barenboim among others, and has appeared at the Salzburg Festival, the Beethoven Festival in Bonn and the Jerusalem Chamber Music Festival.

In May 2011, Michael Barenboim performed Schönberg's Violin Concerto with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra under the baton of Pierre Boulez, who was scheduled to conduct the 5th Philharmonic Soirée, but was forced to cancel for health reasons. In the original plan, Daniel Barenboim was to perform Schönberg's Piano Concerto, but upon his cancellation, he recommended the invitation of Michael Barenboim as the soloist for Schönberg's Violin Concerto. This resulted in a unique constellation in the history of our orchestra: the first Philharmonic performances of the two instrumental concertos of Arnold Schönberg were carried out by a father and son. Daniel Barenboim played the Piano Concerto, op. 42, on June 14 / 15, 2005 with Pierre Boulez conducting and Michael Barenboim played the violin concerto as part of the cycle "Meisterinterpreten II" on May 23, 2012.
