Death of Peter Buchmann

Peter Buchmann

On September 17, 2012, Mr. Peter Buchmann died suddenly of a heart attack at the age of 47. Already at the age of 18, Peter Buchmann, who held a degree in business administration from the Vienna University of Economics and Business, was working for the Buchmann Artist Management Agency, founded by his father, Professor Rudolf Buchmann, in 1978. This family business specializes in the international representation of leading Austrian artists and ensembles such as the Vienna Symphony, the Vienna State Opera, the Volksoper and the Vienna Boy's Choir. In 2006, Peter Buchmann organized the first Vienna Philharmonic tour to Australia. A short time thereafter, when our orchestra decided to become the presenter of the Summer Night Concert Schönbrunn, the organization of this open air event was entrusted to the Buchmann Artist Management Agency. As of 2008, in close collaboration with the Philharmonic's administrative committee, the responsible governmental agencies, the ORF, the European Broadcasting Union and the television marketing agency Highlight Event AG, Peter Buchmann oversaw the technical implementation of this gigantic project, which employs over 700 people, with impressive calm. In so doing, he contributed greatly to the further development of this major event which this year was attended by over 100,000 people and was broadcast on television to more than sixty countries on all continents.

The funeral on September 26th at the Kagran Cemetery was attended not only by numerous friends and artists from Austria, but also by many representatives of international musical organizations. The Vienna Boys' Choir and the Vienna Philharmonic, represented by Dieter Flury, Rainer Küchl, Daniel Froschauer, Heinrich Koll and Robert Nagy, as well as Hans Peter Schuh, Gotthard Eder, Lars Michael Stransky, Mark Gaal and Paul Halwax paid musical tributes as a final farewell to Peter Buchmann.
