Summer Night Concert Schönbrunn 2013

On May 30, 2013, the 10th Vienna Philharmonic Summer Night Concert took place in the park of Schönbrunn Palace. It was the first time that Honorary Member Lorin Maazel conducted this major international event, which this year had as its theme "Wagner and Verdi". While Wagner was represented by the "Meistersinger" Overture, the Grail Narrative from "Lohengrin", the Prelude and Liebestod from "Tristan und Isolde" and the "Ride of the Valkyries", Giuseppe Verdi was represented by the "Triumphal March" from "Aida", Dances from "Otello", the aria "La mia letizia infondere" from the opera "I Lombardi" as well as the overtures to "The Force of Destiny" and "Luisa Miller". The vocal soloist was Michael Schade (tenor). The first encore, according to the established tradition, was the waltz from "Wiener Blut" by Johann Strauß, which this year was followed by his fast polka "Éljen a Magyár".

"According to tradition": This expression was also indicative of the weather, which again featured conditions of 11 degrees Celsius at the beginning of the concert along with sometimes strong wind and intermittent rainfall. These conditions however did not dampen the mood of the approximately 15,000 people who attended despite inclement conditions. On the contrary, The audience response was not at all cooled by it, but proved to be particularly enthusiastic and, , the warmth of the audience's  appreciation could still be felt despite the long distance to the stage. The concert was broadcast to 73 different countries by the ORF and the EBU and recorded for CD and DVD.
