The artistic collaboration between Maestro Riccardo Muti and the Vienna Philharmonic began in 1971. Since that time, Muti has conducted nearly 500 concerts with the orchestra. Among these have been four New Year's Concerts (1993, 1997, 2000, 2004), Philharmonic Subscription Concerts, memorial concerts, and concert tours. In 2011, Muti was named Honorary Member of the Vienna Philharmonic.

Andreas Großbauer, chairman of the Vienna Philharmonic, emphasizes Muti's distinguished role with the orchestra: "The special quality of his performances lends Riccardo Muti an extraordinary significance in Vienna Philharmonic history. Muti is well-known for the intensive research which forms the basis of his interpretations. He also has a profound understanding of the specific Vienna Philharmonic sound - whether it be in the opera house, the concert hall or the recording studio. As a token of our close artistic affiliation, we invite Riccardo Muti to conduct the New Year's Concert for the fifth time on January 1, 2018."
